Henry Burton (Adrian Lester) is a young, idealistic campaign worker who has just joined the political machine of Gov Jack Stanton (John Travolta). Stanton is a charming candidate for President. His wife, Susan Stanton (Emma Thompson), is a force to be reckoned with. Henry is paired up with Libby Holden (Kathy Bates). Libby is an experience campaign worker who is as idealistic as Henry. The pair observes the campaign as Stanton and his wife prove that they will do anything, and destroy anyone, to win. Henry and Libby discover that the Stantons have as many skeletons in the closet as the opposition, including a sex scandal that could tank the campaign. Henry and Libby have to cling to their morals in the face of the Stanton political machine.
