Alex Fletcher (Hugh Grant) used to be in a boy band. Now middle-aged, he plays at county fairs, on the nostalgia circuit. Younger Sophie (Drew Barrymore) waters plants for a living. While she's tending Alex's plants, she hears him struggling to compose a song for Cora Corman (Haley Bennet), a hot girl singer. Sophie adds some lyrics of her own. They're good. Alex pursues her, mostly for her writing ability. He needs this song. Finally they write Cora's song together, a song about getting past fear and opening up to love. It's a success. And they find they've fallen in love.
