Tom Warshaw (David Duchovny), an emigre from New York, discovers that his problems in the present can only be solved by returning to the past and discovering their roots. Although he traveled to France to try to get away from his past, he soon finds himself descending into a series of flashbacks in which he relives his youth in 1970s Greenwich Village. In these flashbacks, it is revealed that Tom struggled with his druggie mother (Tea Leoni), but also struck up a rewarding friendship with a mentally disabled man (Robin Williams) and began to take the first tentative steps into adult sexuality with a mysterious prisoner (Erykah Badu).
