Three characters seem to play a role in each other’s lives throughout several situational incarnations of their stories. Gary (Ryan Reynolds) is a troubled television star who ends up under house arrest with no idea why he’s there. His publicist Margaret (Melissa McCarthy) and next-door neighbor Sarah (Hope Davis) are his only links to the outside world, but he begins to distrust them when he feels they know more about his house arrest than he’s telling. In their next incarnations, the house remains as the set for a television show created by Gary, who is now Gavin. Margaret becomes the lead actress Melissa, and Sarah becomes development VP Susan. Their next cooperative incarnation is actually the pilot of Gary’s show. Gary becomes Gabriel, a videogame designer who, along with wife Mary (originally Margaret) and their daughter Noelle (Elle Fanning), gets stuck in the woods when their car breaks down. Their different versions of themselves explore the relationships between the creator and his creation, as Gary, Margaret, and Sarah act out those roles over and over.
