Slim Hiller (Jennifer Lopez), a working-class waitress, falls in love with Mitch (Billy Campbell), a very wealthy contractor, whom she met at work. They both get married and live a happy life with a daughter of their own, until one day, Slim finds out that Mitch has been cheating on her all along. Mitch now shows his evil side, beating Slim, following her around wherever possible. Slim begins to fear not only for her own, but for her daughters life and is trying to find a way out of this abusive relationship. She seeks shelter at her ex-boyfriend’s place and is planning her escape, even considering the unthinkable, murdering her husband.
