Johnny Gallagher (Gene Hackman) was supposed to take a political prisoner (Tommy Lee Jones) from Germany to the United States, but he loses him in an airport bathroom. When he discovers too late that his captive was part of a complex scheme to kill the Soviet premier and sabotage arms-control talks, he tries everything to recover the lost "package" -- even enlisting the help of his estranged ex-wife (Joanna Cassidy).
